授業概要 Course Outline
|
|
This course provides background information important for understanding the translation experience. We will study translation through practice, starting with translating a picture book, proceeding to audio-visual translation, song translation and translation of other genres. We will study how to translate under the constraints of a certain genre and develop literary creativity in the English language translation. Students are encouraged to work in groups sharing their translations and discuss their experiences with their peers.

Conveying the same information in two different languages, Japanese and English, is a difficult task that requires applying various techniques to deal with common problems typically involved in the translation practice. In this course, special attention is paid to the structural differences between the Japanese and the English languages. By the end of this course, students are expected to develop translation skills and to deepen their knowledge of translation theory.

This year, our university has invited the renowned Finnish children's literature translation scholar, Riitta Oittinen. She will conduct three workshops in this class. Please make sure that you bring some writing and drawing tools (penciles, markers, pens of various colours) on the days we have the workshop.
Riitta Oittinen's workshop aims to encourage our students to participate in children's book translation contests and/or take the picture book translator qualification test. Both the contest and qualification test are voluntary, and your participation will not affect the overall grade in this class. The details of how and when to apply will be announced in class.
For our audio-visual translation class, you will need a Windows PC. We will install professional subtitle translation software, Okosuke-kun, and use it in class to create a voice cover for a YouTube video by Shinagawa Tourism Association. Students are encouraged to volunteer to record their translations. With your consent, the recordings will be sent to Shinagawa Tourism Association, and an English-language video will be created using these recordings. The video will be uploaded to Shinagawa Tourism Association's official YouTube channel.
