授業概要
Course
Outline
This course provides background information important for understanding the translation experience. We will study translation through practice, starting with translations of the Japanese language newspapers and press releases. After some practice, we will switch to translating in different contexts, such as literary translation and manga translation. We will study how to translate under the constraints of a certain genre and develop literal creativity in the English language translation. Students are encouraged to work in groups sharing their translations and discuss their experiences with their peers.

到達目標
Aim/goal
This course is designed to raise awareness of the considerations that must be taken into account when translating a text. Conveying the same information in two different languages, Japanese and English, is a difficult task that requires applying various techniques to deal with common problems typically involved in the translation practice. In this course, special attention is paid to the structural differences between the Japanese and the English languages. By the end of this course, students are expected to develop translation skills and to deepen their knowledge of translation theory.
