Theme
Effective note-taking is a skill that has become less emphasized in the digital age. It is still a very important skill. In the same digital age, more and more information is delivered visually. It is important to understand the relationships between oral and visual information.

Outline
Students in this class will:
(1) hone their listening and viewing-awareness skills in using documentaries on a variety of content areas.
(2) write effective notes in English by learning note-taking strategies and ideas that can be applied in any language or context.
(3) use their notes in informal speaking small groups to present summaries of what they have watched.
(4) read a variety of worksheets related to documentaries used.
(5) conduct at least one formal group presentation using a documentary of their choice that includes 1-4 above.

Aim/goal
The objective of this course is to combine note-taking with audio-visual sources (documentaries). The sources will be in English. Models will be used to help understanding of class activities and aims. Students will work both individually and in groups. A wide range of language skills will be used.

What Students
are expected
to do

Students need to keep in mind the aims/goals of the course and understand what needs to be done or prepared for the next class at all times. Several hours must be used to complete all assignments to meet set deadlines. If they are absent for any reason they must still follow all requirements. It is the student's responsibility to contact instructors if they are any questions. Especially they need to prepare for presentations, including contacting their peers.

Feedback methods on assignments
Feedback on any assignments will be given to both the class as a whole and then to individual students. Some feedback will be in written form but it will mostly be oral. Students are expected to pay attention to feedback and apply suggestions. If there are any questions about the feedback it is the student's responsibility to contact their instructor as soon as possible.
