Course
Outline
This course provides an introduction to the study of translation, through practice and theory. We will begin by discussing the purposes, kinds, and rewards of translation. We will work on a variety of translation projects, including folk and children's tales, the media, advertising, speeches, songs, and literature. Students will share their translations with other class members and discuss and revise their work with group assistance. We will discuss the principles of good translation.

Aim/goal
This course will introduce students to the art of translation through practice in translating from a variety of genres, ranging from children's stories to advertisements, songs, and adult literature. It will also introduce some of the basic principles of translation theory. While developing our skills in translation, we also seek to deepen our appreciation of literature and language.

第2回 Haiku and short poetry: The sounds and spirit of language. Metaphor 
第3回 "Kotodama": The spirit of words and language. Translating dialect and era considerations 
第4回 Young adult literature: from Harry Potter 
第5回 Harry Potter, irony, sarcasm, humor 
第6回 Harrt Potter; the world of sounds and onomatopoeia
"The Bicycle": Translating from manga and social commentary. 
第7回 "The Bicycle" : Differences (and similarities) in culture, language, religion, politics, and translation. 
第8回 "Moon Boy": Translating from Japanese to English. 
第9回 "Moon Boy": Listening and learning from the sounds of words. 
第10回 Translating literature: Novels and short stories; an introduction. 
第11回 John Steinbeck's "Breakfast": Language of period, time, and social class. 
第12回 "Breakfast": The challenges of dialect, slang, jargon, and idioms. 
第13回 "Breakfast": Translating with culture differences and language differences.

Prepare translation assignments and readings. Preparation time for readings and translations generally requires about 60 to 90 minutes per class.

Listen to lectures and take notes. Students will write their translations on the board for comparison with other students' translations, and comment on each other's translations.

Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on students' translation assignments and class participation, including writing their translation assignments on the board in class and commenting on their own and other members' translations.

This course continues from the spring semester course 翻訳基礎演習1-a. Students are requested to register for 翻訳基礎演習1-a as well within the same academic year.
