Theme
Advanced level English reading course for comprehension, speed, exposure to various kinds of reading, development of reading strategies, and enjoyment of reading in English.

Course
Outline
This class will be conducted in English. We will use several sources of reading materials: 1) a general reading textbook focusing on reading strategies and skills, 2) handout prints of stories and articles, 3) independent readings chosen by the students from the graded reader series, the library, and other sources. Classes will include lectures, oral discussions, independent reading, oral presentations, and written reports. All students will participate in the Reading Marathon; a competition based on reading and book reports.

Aim/goal
This course encourages students to develop their own, self-directed reading program, so that they may make English reading a natural and enjoyable part of their lives. It teaches effective strategies to improve reading speed, comprehension, and enjoyment. It also encourages students to speak and write about their reading, and to develop a deeper appreciation for literature.

What Students
are expected
to do
before class
Students should prepare homework assignments; these include the readings and, occasionally, written and oral presentation assignments. They should also continue their independent readings and reports for the Reading Marathon. Preparation of reading and writing assignments will require 60 to 90 minutes per class.
