Course
Outline
This class provides translation practice aimed at developing a creative understanding of translation, languages, and culture. Students will share their translations with other class members and offer comments and suggestions for improvement. Assignments will include translations of both literary fiction and practical, non-fiction writing. We will include some translations of information for tourists in cooperation with the Shinagawa ward department of tourism. Other assignments will include translation of short stories and transcribing and translating from movies.

Aim/goal
This class aims at developing students' creative spirit of translation--of both literary and practical, non-fiction writings--while developing a deeper appreciation of languages and literature.

第1回 Introduction to the course: The aims, practice, and spirit of translation. 
第2回 Literal translation vs. "free" translation: Responsibilities and freedoms in translation; readings from translators on translation. Translating of poetry. 
第3回 Transcription and translation from movies. Project: "The Wizard of Oz": introduction. 
第4回 Transcription from movies: "The Wizard of Oz" 
第5回 From movie transcription to translation: "The Wizard of Oz". 
第6回 Translation of "The Wizard of Oz" Revising process. 
第7回 "The Wizard of Oz" final versions of translation project.
