ラテンアメリカにおいて、暴力と政治は密接に結びついている。ラテンアメリカのロマン主義文学は、独裁政治や暴力に対抗する手段として発展した。この授業ではラテンアメリカのロマン主義文学を代表する作品を原書で精読し、19世紀末のラテンアメリカ社会をより深く理解する。

スペイン語で長編の作品を読み、単にストーリーを追うのではなく、人物造形やその心理、時代背景や社会といった深層の部分までをしっかりと読み取る。読後の感想にとどまらず、文学批評をする。必要なら批評理論にもアプローチする。

事前学習（3時間）：一回の授業で読むページを事前に指定するので、全員必ず予習をする。授業での発表担当者を指定し、自分の担当分のレジュメ（内容の概要と疑問点や批評）を事前に作成する。
授業内では担当者の発表に加え、参加者も質問や意見を述べ、発展的な議論を展開する。教員もコメントを述べる。
事後学習（1時間）：授業内での学びを復習し、自分の訳を修正する。
